History

Established in 1977, the Fort Lewis Thrift Shop has been a mainstay for service members and military families assigned to Joint Base Lewis McChord (JBLM). From the beginning, it has been a place for helping the military community, bargain shopping and friendship. The shop is located in two buildings that started out as horse stables and date back to World War II. We have faced many challenges in getting the shop to where it is today. Our biggest accomplishment has been bringing the shop into the digital age and the focus has been on ensuring that the bulk of proceeds are funneled back into the military community through schools, units and nonprofit organizations that provide critical services.

Who We Are

The Fort Lewis Thrift Shop is operated by a combination of volunteers, employees, and managerial staff; all overseen by a volunteer board of directors. Our volunteers and staff are a special group of people who love to help the military community with their needs. The team is as diverse as America itself, with emigrants from around the world who are now U.S. citizens and serving in the U.S. Military working alongside volunteers from across the nation. They range in age from teenagers to seniors in their 90s, some of whom have been with us for more than thirty years.

What keeps them coming back is the satisfaction of being involved in an organization that supports the community it serves through regular charitable donations. The shop is also a great place to meet people from all walks of life whether you’re new in town or have been here for years. Volunteers and staff enjoy witnessing the fascinatingly unpredictable items that come through our doors each week, only to be snatched up by shoppers in pursuit of thrift shop Gold. We also have memorable times on holidays and birthdays, enjoying the special goodies that are brought in for all to share.

Our Clients

Military Service Members and Families

We’re a great resource for those who live on or near Joint Base Lewis McChord (JBLM). Single service members and those with families visit us in droves to replenish their closets and cupboards, stock up on furniture and discover new books and games.  Our friendly team is always on hand to answer questions so shoppers can easily find what they need.

Collectors

The thrift shop is filled with hidden treasures that collectors, many of them retired military service members, are seeking. Some items aren’t available anywhere else, like memorabilia from historic events and military engagements. For that reason, the shop has become a destination for collectors of all ages from around the Pacific Northwest.

Antique Store Owners

Several times a week we’re visited by private business owners who are searching for quality items they can resell in their antique or collectible stores around Pierce & Thurston County. It’s an indicator of both the value and consistency of the goods we receive from donors.
